WET N WILD MEGASLICKS BALM STAINS: REVIEW & SWATCHES

Prepare yourself for another post in our Feeling Pretty series....

Is it a lipstick? Is it a lip liner? Is it a lip gloss? No, it's a balm stain! To be more specific, it is the Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain, and it rocks! It is creamy, smooth, pigmented lip color that glides on beautifully and leaves a long-lasting stain of color. And it only costs $3-$4 (depending on where you buy it--we picked a few up at Walgreen's for $2.99 each with the $1 coupons that were on them), and it is available in six stunning shades!

These balm stains are truly fabulous, but that doesn't mean they are flawless--there are a few cons we want to point out. Perhaps the biggest con is that they tend to dry out the lips after a few hours of wear (even though they feel moisturizing when applying them at first). Another thing is that the stain is not quite as bright as the color of the initial application is--it is a bit duller, and depending on how dry the lips are underneath, may look a bit uneven (if the lips are dry enough to have "lines" or "cracks"). Another fresh application (or a little lip balm or gloss on top) fixes the slightly dull and uneven look an instant, though! Also, they are not exactly true to color. In other words, what you see in the tube is not necessarily the color you get on your lips. Some shades go on a bit brighter than they look, or a bit pinker, but they are still very pretty and stay basically the same color (until they fade to a slightly less vibrant shade after three hours or so). Although, we heard some bloggers say that they did not just fade on them, they turned a brighter, slightly different shade over time--which obviously was not our experience....

So there are a few cons to consider, but they are not a big enough deal for us to dislike them. Which I guess is pretty obvious, since we went back and bought the whole rest of the collection after trying our first two!!

If you want to know EXACTLY how well and how long they wear, here are the details of our little test....

Basically, we took these two pictures right after applying them. Aren't they pretty?! The lip color is so smooth and pigmented. (I am wearing "Rico Mauve" in the top picture, and Kaitlyn is wearing "Pinky Promise" in the bottom picture.)

After wearing them for about four hours, we took these updated pictures, where the color looks basically the same, but a little faded, and our lips might look a bit drier--they also FELT drier after wearing them for four hours! (By the way, the sun was in a different place in this set of pictures, since it is four hours...so please ignore the slightly different lighting and trust me when I say the lip colors are nearly the same color as before, just a bit duller.)

We wanted to see how our lips would look if we put on some lip balm and lip gloss. It turns out that either one helps resolve the "dried out" look and feel, but does not take away any of the color! It just adds a smooth, shiny look to the stain!

So, see what we mean about the whole longevity thing? The application is super pigmented, the actual stain you see later is a bit duller than the initial application, and it seems drier, too. But, it's easily refreshed with another application of either the balm stain, or a little gloss or lip balm on top! So, the cons can pretty much be reversed in an instant!

Now that we have given you a pretty thorough review and shared our little longevity test with you, let's talk about the individual colors! In the "swatched arm" photo below, from left to right we have: "Lady and the Vamp," "Red-dy or Not," "Rico Mauve," "Pinky Promise," "A Stiff Pink," and "Nudist Colony."

"Nudist Colony" is a light peachy, nude with pink undertones.

"A Stiff Pink" is a super bright, creamy pink.

"Pinky Promise" is a light peachy-pink that looks peachier in the tube than it does on the lips. It goes on pinker with a bit of a frosty sheen to it.

"Rico Mauve" is a pretty berry shade with a lovely shine.

"Red-dy or Not" is a bright, yet understated red--so pretty!

"Lady in the Vamp" is a deeper berry shade, and oh, so pretty!

Aren't these colors all so lovely?! We really enjoy these balm stains! They are fun additions in our makeup collections! And we love that you can wear them alone, or with gloss or lipstick on top! We love the idea of wearing this under a lipstick, so as the lipstick fades, the complimentary color of the stain shows through! Here is an example of this ("A Stiff Pink" underneath one of my favorite bright pink lipsticks, Wet n Wild's "Noveau Pink"):

The Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stains are versatile and fabulous, and we highly recommend them! If you have tried these out, let us know what you think in the comment section! And if you have not tried them, tell us what color you would be most likely to try out!

  2. Different skin tone will result in different stain color. For example: Rico mauve stain looks the same as original color on you and my sister who has fair skin tone but, it turned to bright pink on my lip because I have medium skin tone. The same thing happened to me with Jordana Tera Crave lip balm. My lip turned to bright pink in after the gloss faded while my sister's lip stain with the same original color.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with us! I saw other reviews that mentioned these stains turning brighter colors throughout the day, but for the most part, I don't think I have experienced that (maybe it's because I'm so fair-skinned?).... So generally, are you a fan of these balm stains?? :)
